Random Act of Kindness

Earlier this month, my friend, Darren Burgfeld, was combing through Craigslist (not sure what he was actually looking for) when he came across this post:

http://semo.craigslist.org/zip/1589371687.html

“Grandson just got out of Cardinal Glennon for cancer treatment/ They want him to be in a toddler bed due to all of his chemo and worried of him falling out of a regular bed. Money is tight due to all expenses of being in hospital for 3 months. All he is asking for is a cars lighting mcqueen bed. He has been a trooper during the whole thing.
free or low cost would be great.”

Without questioning the authenticity of the ad, Darren took to Facebook and posted this as his status. He placed a simple paypal donate button on his wall and within 24 hours there was more than $400 raised. It unfortunately took nearly a month for Toys R Us to fulfill the order.

On Feb 28th, 2010, Darren delivered the bed, mattress, mattress pad, sheets and curtains to the family. He assembled the bed with the help of the kid’s brother and gave the remaining $150 to the family.

I am grateful that I was able to be a part of this and I want to thank everyone that contributed. This was one of the coolest things I have witnessed someone do for a complete stranger. D, I’m pretty sure you can take the rest of the year off; you’ve earned your karma points.
